Teaching has proven to be one of my greatest loves. My journey in
education has taken me into the public and private school
classrooms of New Jersey, Florida, North Carolina, and, most
recently, Virginia. Beyond teaching, I have dabbled in several
literary-careers: employed as a publicist for a historic, nationally-
acclaimed theater; a reader for a successful New York literary
agency; and a journalist. I am the author of two young-adult
novels, with a third forthcoming from Simon & Schuster. I hold
an M.F.A. in fiction from the University of North Carolina
Wilmington and a B.A. in English from Florida State
University, graduating from both institutions with honors.
My students are always asked to think deeply and conceptually
about the tasks at hand. I encourage learning that empowers
students to approach assignments with an analytical mindset,
utilizing past experiences to solve new and unknown problems.
One might call this a process versus product-based approach.
I am also a huge advocate of teaching a student how to seek out
information on his or her own. Many students do not grasp the
amount of resources available to them online or at school. I like to
say that by the end of my coaching sessions with a student, they
will not only be proficient in the subject matter but a stellar
manager of personal resources--online, at school, and at home.
They will be students who are less dependent on their teachers for
information and more dependent on their curious and resilient
minds to seek out the information needed to move forward in
their academic and future professional careers.
